The
History of the Spring Arbor Township
Senior Center
Upon
completion, an Open House was held on June 25, 1995, giving members
of the community the opportunity to view the facility. Meal service
was begun immediately, with lunches being prepared by the Jackson
County Department on Aging and delivered to Spring Arbor. Noon lunches
are served daily Monday through Friday, with meal costs being covered
by a nominal suggested donation. A variety of activities and informative
lectures are offered ranging from knitting and crocheting to computer
usage, aerobics, and lectures on health or other matters pertinent
to senior citizens.
Field
trips are taken periodically to places of interest around southern
Michigan. One of the highlights of the year is the annual New Year’s
Eve party, which provides a delightful evening of celebration. In
addition, the building provides an ideal setting for many groups
who rent it for family gatherings, receptions, and other events.
Inasmuch
as the Center was designed to function as a nutrition site for the
Department on Aging, it was established that the Department would
be responsible for program and personnel policies, with the Spring
Arbor Township Board responsible for building-related policies.
The Center is included in the budget as a function of the Township.
Volunteers provide many hours of their time to serve the Center’s
constituents, helping to reduce the expenses for service and maintenance.
The
following persons constitute the present Advisory Board: Phyllis
Allen, Ward Barker, Estella Beardslee, Debi Cramer, June Dodd, Virginia
Easton, Troy Ganton (Township Board representative), Vinnie Hodgins,
Carl Jacobson, Bill Jaquays, Elwin Johnson, George Kline, and Ned
Philpott. Bev Greene, the present Coordinator, has instituted many
new features during his tenure. However, he is eager to accept suggestions
for program variety, and he is constantly seeking ways to be of
service to the senior residents of western Jackson County.
